I awoke from a sound in the hall. A door closed. A cough. I scrambled from the couch where I’d fallen asleep, reading about Cooking with Fruit by Harriet Schuyler Nelson.

Tony stuck his head in the door, his hair shiny from melting snow. “You still up?”

I took a wobbly step toward him. “I cooked dinner.” I could tell he was exhausted. Shadows beneath his eyes made him look gaunt. “I didn’t know when you’d get here.”

I expected him to turn me down, but he patted my arm before pouring himself a whiskey. “I better see what it is,” he said before sinking into a chair.

“It’ll be a bit. Need to warm things up first.” And from the doorway, “just stay there. I’ll bring it to you.”

By the time I returned with two plates, he was sleeping. I removed the half-empty glass from his fingers and got a blanket—all that work wasted.

But when I covered him, he opened his eyes.

“Done already?” He sniffed. “Smells delicious.”

I placed one plate on his lap, the other on the arm of the chair. I’d only half-cooked the pasta and finished it now. There hadn’t been fresh tomatoes, but I’d discovered a can, pureed it, added onion, thinly sliced garlic, basil, and a few other spices, I’d found.

Tony ate with gusto. “This is delicious,” he said twice, half to himself. By the time he was done he took a deep breath. “Well done.”

Wordlessly, I handed him the other plate. On it laid pale egg-shaped cookies. “Amaretti legieri…almond cakes.”

Tony selected one, then another. Between bites he continued to mumble. “So good.”

At last I smiled. “It was fun. I could use more ingredients though.”

A shadow ran across Tony’s features. “Not sure how to tell you this. I had to close the club tonight. My supply line got compromised. Trucks broke down; there were raids. I’m sorry.”

I collected Tony’s dishes. “I don’t understand. What does it mean?”

“Unless I find a new supplier tomorrow and a way to bribe the police,” Tony said, “I’m ruined.”

To my surprise, I found myself back at his side. I placed a palm on his head, trying to imagine what it felt like to have so much to lose.

Tony leaned back in his chair and took my hand. By now I understood what reflected in his eyes. It was the same with all men I’d met. Lust.

He caressed the inside of my forearm and pulled me on his lap. This time I knew what to do. I pulled off my drawers and straddled him. His hand now on my legs, he pushed up my dress. Each movement was unhurried, yet purposeful. And for the first time, I found interest in the act. I unbuttoned his pants and fitted myself to him.

His lips found mine and together we rocked back and forth. Slowly. Tony’s hands pulled down the sleeve of my dress and began to lick my breast the way he’d done the first time.

Inside me, things began to change. The nerves along my spine tingled, spread to the front, up and down my belly.
